Cleaning Chemicals On The Rise

US demand for industrial and institutional cleaning chemicals is forecast to rise 4.2 percent annually to $7.5 billion in 2002. Gains depend on growing demand for higher performing, more cost-effective cleaners, especially those formulated with multifunctional surfactants, germicides and other specialty raw materials. Environmental and consumer safety concerns, such as the release of harmful volatile organic compounds into the air and the spread of infectious diseases, will also drive advances. These and other trends are presented in Industrial & Institutional Cleaning Chemicals, a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc., a Cleveland-based industrial market research firm. Strongest growth is expected for disinfectants/sanitizers and warewashing detergents due to their rising importance in the attack against bacteria, viruses, and other detrimental germs in foodservice establishments, the food processing industry and elsewhere.

The ongoing popularity of ultra concentrated cleaners, which reduce the need for certain raw materials (e.g. inorganic builders) while decreasing the use of others (e.g. surfactants) will also stimulate the I & I cleaner demand and will consequently spur gains for specialty surfactants. Specifically, cationics and sugar-based nonionics are expected to see substantial growth, due to their attractive environmental images, mildness, and other value-added properties.

Cleaner gains will be limited to an extent by moves away from specialty cleaners designed for specific functions toward products that are effective against a broad range of stains and dirt. This saves users time and money since fewer types of cleaners need to be purchased overall.

The food service sector will provide the most favorable growth opportunities for cleaning chemicals, reflecting the need for cleaning products that are powerful, yet also gentle for workers, and environmentally benign. Such products include disinfectants and sanitizers, hand cleansers, and warewashing detergents. Cleaners with germicides and other antimicrobial compounds are expected to see particularly marked growth in foodservice establishments as efforts continue to prevent the transmission of food-related diseases.
