Indoor Air Quality Seminar

Air Quality Sciences, Inc. announces its fourth annual seminar on indoor air quality, to be held October 5-6. This two-day seminar, Understanding Microbial and Chemical Contaminants in Buildings. This seminar, to be held in Atlanta, Georgia, will cover sources and types of microbiological and chemical contaminants, sampling procedures, types of laboratory analyses, interpretation of laboratory results, and remediation procedures. A hands-on session will demonstrate appropriate equipment and techniques for collecting IAQ samples. The speakers will emphasize air, surface, and dust sampling and material collection for bulk and product emission studies. Seminars and attendees will have the opportunity to tour AQSí world-class laboratories where microbial and VOC analyses and environmental chamber tests are conducted.

Understanding Microbial and Chemical Contaminants in Buildings is designed for consultants, building owners and managers, facility managers, school administrators, attorneys, and all professionals involved in sampling IAQ contaminants and interpreting laboratory results.

Topics will include:

  • sources and types of chemical and microbial contaminants
  • sampling strategies and procedures
  • types of laboratory analyses
  • interpretation of results
  • remediation procedures
  • case studies
  • hands-on demonstrations on appropriate equipment and sampling techniques

Presenters will include experts Phil Morey, Ph.D. and Marilyn Black Ph.D. as well as AQSí laboratory directors and field investigators. The seminar will be held at the Cobb Galleria in Atlanta, Georgia on October 5 and 6, 1998. The registration fee is $450 by September 14, 1998, and $500 for registrations received after that date. This fee includes course materials, lectures, the sampling workshop, laboratory tours, a cocktail reception, and continental breakfasts. ABIH certification maintenance credits will be awarded. IEHA Offers Certification Training

Education is the top priority at the International Executive Housekeepers Association. Housekeepers and managers can develop effective management practices and learn specific aspects of housekeeping management, complete certification requirements, earn CEU credits and update current practices through self-study. This program consists of five management skills modules and eleven technical and administrative skills modules. All courses necessary for Certified Executive Housekeeper certification are available through the IEHA self study course.

Two series of courses are available:

Managing for Effectóreflecting current basics in effective management, including many specifics releated to executive housekeeping.

Technical and Administrative Skillsóincludes both required and elective subjects specifically designed for executive housekeeper on-the-job needs.

Oldest Operating Truck Mounts

As part of their 30th anniversary celebration, Steam Way International has been sponsoring a nationwide contest to locate the oldest operating Steam Way truck mount, the Steam Way truck mount with the most verifiable hours, and other categories of Steam Way distinction.

Ralph S. Bloss, Steam Way Chairman of the Board, announced the winners during the Steam Way Extravaganza í98. Steam Wayís very first production model truck mount, the Steam Way TurboMatic®, serial number 1, built in 1975, is still in operation todayóit is the main cleaning machine for Craig Cookís Carpet Care in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Meanwhile, Dave, Pat, and Kirk Grauberger of Steam Way Unlimited in Greeley, Colorado, produced hour gauges to show that their unit has 40,613 verified hours!

Meanwhile, in a related matteróan exciting new event was added to the Steam Way Extravaganza for 1998. Steam Way donated a 6100SE SuperVacuum Truck Mount for a charitable raffle. The hundreds of attendees could purchase a raffle ticket for $20. All proceeds from the raffle were donated to the Ronald McDonald House in Denver, Colorado. The truck mount was won by Dan Fitzgerald of Aspen Carpet Cleaning in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.

Omni Facility Resources, Inc. Announces Appointments

One of the most rapidly growing specialty facility maintenance companies, Omni Facility Resources, Inc., announced two important additions to its senior management team. Myron Portnoy has joined Omni as Vice-President of Sales and Marketing. He will direct sales programs including public relations, national marketing, and sales training, as well as leading Omniís Strategic Sales Program to increase market share in selected market segments. Mr. Portnoy has been regional account manager with DuPont Flooring Systems, President of Sales Dynamics, and for 17 years vice president of sales for International Service Systems, Inc. He is a member of BOMA and IFMA.

Ronald P. Miller has joined Omni as Vice-President of Technical Services. Miller will direct Omniís Mechanical and HVAC Maintenance operations throughout the US. Miller was formerly survey engineer with ARAMARK Facility Services Division, and vice-president of ISS Energy Services, Inc.

Hoover Sues Bissell, MA AG Sues Tower

On the litigation front, the Hoover Company is suing Bissel, Inc. for alleged patent infringements for the designs and concepts of certain uprights and steam extractors. Hoover says it holds two patentsófor a valve arrangement, and certain upright vacuumsóand several Bissell Singer models allegedly infringe on these patents. Hoover also charges that the Bissell Power Steamer is similar in operation and appearance to the Hoover Steam Vac extractor.

Meanwhile, the Massachusetts Attorney general is suing Tower Cleaning Systems, Inc. and its master franchise JCK Group for allegedly deceptive practices. The suit charges that Tower and JCK took in more than $120,000 in franchise fees but then didnít live up to promises of providing franchisees with clients and guaranteeing a return on investment.
